Neither Canada’s nor BC’s climate commitments are strong enough to ensure that we do our part as Canadians to avert the climate crisis. We need cities to take climate leadership while we push for more ambitious federal and provincial carbon pollution reduction goals and plans. Municipalities around the world are already working to reduce carbon pollution and ensure a smooth and just transition to clean jobs and a 100% renewable economy. The Paris UN climate summit was an important international milestone in the global effort to end the climate crisis, but the countries' current commitments to reduce carbon pollution won't be enough to prevent catastrophic climate impacts.
I call on my municipality to adopt a target and a transition plan for 100% renewable energy by 2050 for all transportation, electricty, buildings, and industry in my community, as well as have dedicated staff working on this transition to 100% renewable energy.
