About Kootenay Rideshare

Kootenay Rideshare is a project of the West Kootenay EcoSociety, initiated and maintained in order to help facilitate travel and transportation of goods across the Kootenay region and beyond. The Healthy Community Society of the North Slocan has contributed to the site with funding from the Columbia Basin Trust.

The new Kootenay Rideshare website, launched November 2016, features user-ratings, branded portals and is mobile-friendly.

Why rideshare?

Ridesharing saves money:

The Canadian Automobile Association reports that the average yearly cost of operating a vehicle can be as high as $8600 a year, or nearly $23.50 per day! Ridesharing can help you offset these costs because passengers contribute gas money!

Ridesharing reduces your greenhouse gas emissions:

Greenhouse gases that are the result of burning fossil fuels are causing our Earth's climate to change at an alarming rate. Road transportation is responsible for 46% of the average Canadian's personal greenhouse gas emissions.

Ridesharing with one other person can reduce the average commuter's greenhouse gas emissions by half a tonne to two tonnes per year!

Ridesharing calms traffic:

Almost 80% of cars on Canadian roads are single occupancy vehicles. By taking a rideshare instead of a personal vehicle, you help reduce traffic flow, making travel safer and less stressful for drivers.

Ridesharing builds community:

Traveling together with people builds relationships. Offering rides is important for those who don't have vehicles or who are no longer capable of driving but need to get places - especially in our rural communities where public transit is limited. By sharing a ride you are helping your neighbours and maybe making new friends.

How Kootenay Rideshare works

Search current postings for a journey that meets your needs. Rides offered are posted by people willing to transport people or things. Rides needed are posted by people who need a ride. Click on the person's name to view details about the journey, and contact them by email or phone if the journey works for you.

If you are making a trip and willing to take passengers or transport goods for people, Add a journey. Fill out the form and provide contact information so other people can reach you. Talk to your contact about sharing costs and travel plans.

West Kootenay EcoSociety doesn't screen postings or perform background checks, so we encourage you to learn more about the person with whom you're sharing a ride. Read our Tips for Trips

Thanks for making the Kootenay Rideshare one of the most successful sites in Canada!
